Hello,
My name is Jonathan Kadish and my goal is to advance the field of Aquaponics to be the answer to the world’s food shortages and also have a positive impact our energy problems. Humanity is on an unsustainable path of global destruction and depletion. Aquaponics can supply the world with protein from fish and nutrition from plants. Nearly half of the oil used currently is used in the growing, transporting, storing and serving food. Aquaponics eliminates much of the need for energy intensive farming and inefficient transport. For every 1 calorie of food American’s eat 10 calories of energy is expended to produce it and deliver it. A small aquaponics operation can produce thousands of pounds of organic fish and vegetables with just a couple of solar panels. With energy efficient greehouses fish and produce can be supplied year round even in northern climates.
So join me as I begin my journey into the future of food. Aquaponics may just save the planet. If your interested in joining me in having an impact in NYC leave a message here… I can’t do this alone, a lot of us will have to work very hard to have an impact.
hello
I am not located in the united states i live in the north of england and study at an agricultural college and today became aware of aquaponics – i would love it if you could provide me with some information regarding your techniques and projected yields and so on. I agree with you that this is an extremely exciting new technology, so i await your response
Yours
Daniel
Hi Daniel, it is super exciting when you just learn about it. I only learned about it 4 weeks ago and have been doing a ton of research. From what I seen a commercial system in a green house 30ft x 100ft the following yields can be achieved:
33,600 Heads of lettuce
5 Metric tons of basil
5 Metric tons of Tilapia
Obviously there are lot of variables like climate, hours of sun ect. that will affect yield.
Next week I am going to a workshop at a company called Nelson & Pade who can be found at http://www.aquaponics.com. There are some other workshops, one which i am going to attend will be at the University of the Virgin Islands this winter. They are a pioneering organization in the field. A great resource is http://www.aquaponicscommunity.com where there are a couple of thousand self titled “Aquapons” sharing knowledge.
Those are yearly figures by the way
