I came across aquaponic because i want to have a cool career since i been layoff. I wanted to have a farm and sell product to local plus food is a good business because we all need it. since i read the article that Dr. Martin Schreibman i became really interested in this form of farming. I would like to learn more but in nyc there almost nothing of sort like class or workshop. I really enjoy what you are doing with all the video teaching posted in youtube. I cant wait to maybe try to build one in my basement. thanks
Definitely join http://www.aquaponicscommunity.com to connect with people. There are over 3000 people world wide working on or growing with aquaponics. There are a lot of people also trying to make money teaching how to do it, but very few who actually farm as a business. When choosing education be sure that the educator is someone who has that farming background. If you are thinking about doing this for real you might just want to get a degree in aquaculture as it will become one of the biggest food industries and there will be many jobs in the future. Already 1/2 the fish we eat is from Aquaculture. The plant part of aquaponics is the bonus. Dr. Schreibman is a local resource that you should use. Contact him and see what is possible.
Sorry to bother you again and thanks for that information that you gave me. I want to experiment with the aquaponic too. Some what i am looking for some food for tilapia but i cant find any store in the NYC area that carry them from internet. i was wondering is you can tell me a store. IF you can thank you in advance.
Getting Tilapia is tricky because they are regulated by each state in different ways. In some cases you need to acquire a permit to own Tilapia so make sure you research that before you decide on Tilapia. I chose goldfish and other non-eating fish because of the size of my system which is too small for Tilapia. Also you will need at least a 55 gallon tank because they grow fast and will be 10-12 inches long within 1 year. There is one person in the Bronx and one person in Brooklyn I know that have Tilapia so they would be a good resource for you to ask those questions regarding Tilapia. If you already have the fish then you can find food here http://www.theaquaponicstore.com/Tilapia-Feed-s/71.htm. They are a vegetable eaters too so you can feed the veggie scraps, grow duckweed (an algae), as well as worms and bugs.
The main crop of aquaponics are the veggies and the fish are secondary. Only a few fish are needed to grow a lot of plants, so why not make them pets?
